Our Adventure - Off To Rupert

HAPPY CANADA DAY
We are Proud to be Adventuring in this Beautiful Country

We kept true to our theme this year by spending Canada Day travelling the hour and a bit over to Prince Rupert. Its a small touristy fishing town that's right on the ocean. Its a beautiful drive out there and its been a top 'to do' on Jeremy's lists of places to see. We didn't have much planned for Canada day, especially since it was a Tuesday, Veronica worked, Mom and Anthony both worked the next day and this was one of Linnea's only days off with her boyfriend. So it was just me and Jer to make our own plans. We decided to spend the day adventuring somewhere new.

We stopped at a popular little spot in town called Copperside. There are three in town and they all do fresh baked goods and sandwiches. We picked up some lunch for the drive and headed out of town. Its literally one long windy road and then you just come upon Prince Rupert.

Its the kind of drive that you want to do in the summer on a bright sunny day which we were lucky enough to enjoy. The road is amazing, you drive along the Skeena River which leads out to the ocean. All of the snow capped mountains have trickling waterfalls that run off into the river which winds the entire way. I have been to Prince Rupert many times in the past but I was excited by how excited Jeremy was to go. He has never seen the Pacific Ocean before.

Here are some of the snap shots I was able to grab along the way!

Rupert straight ahead.

Windy turns and rocky cliffs.

Bright and sunny day.

The largest of many waterfalls.

Mountains of course all along the way.

Followed a logging Truck for a bit.

We did the classic tourist things when we got to Prince Rupert. Surprisingly there were quite a few shops open even though it was Canada Day. We browsed knickknacks and walked along the boardwalk. I'm always on the hunt for post cards and paper to send though snail mail, writing has made it back to my list of happy hobbies. It was a beautiful day, not a cloud in sight which is quite rare in the rainiest city in Canada!

Jer needed to see the boats...obviously.

Oh ya that's a lot of kelp.

And what is the first thing you want to do when visiting a new place? Eat! We decided since we were in a little fishing town we needed some fresh sea food. I normally go to this little place called Smileys but as we swung by there it was closed. We continued on moseying and found the dock entrance so decided to walk down and check out the boats. We looked back and there was this huge restaurant Breakers Pub staring back at us. It was a sign... literally.

Ready for Food but really enjoying our Okanagan Special - OK Gold.

We shared some fat tasty shrimps, breaded cod and Calamari.

Breakers Pub was awesome. The food was outstanding. Freshest fish I can remember having. To top it all off the entire time we were enjoying the patio, the sun, the ocean and of course the food we watched a few seals swimming and playing right below us! Honestly we were a little too excited. We sat there forever just mesmerized by them. It was a family of three and they were lounging, kissing and swimming around. A few fishermen came in and unloaded their catch of the day, washed and cut their prizes on the dock while the seals waited patiently for scraps. It was the best afternoon we could have asked for.

Here are a few shots I took of the seals but unfortunately the iPhone camera is just not equipped for candid animal photography.

After we were all done enjoying the food and show we moved on to... desert! We are such foodies its embarrassing. Jeremy was craving ice-cream, our waitress suggested a little place in the local mall so we hightailed it over there with 10 minutes until close. There was a line of about 6 people and only a few minutes to spare the teenage counter girl did not want to service us but we watched the clock and forced our orders onto her with 3 minutes to spare. Tasty icecream on a hot day is worth being a little pushy over. And we tipped her.

On the way back we decided to stop and explore the waterfall that we had seen on the way there. It was a bit harder to spot but we finally did and pulled over. Jeremy was determined to get close but as we crossed the road and tried to walk past the rail road we realized you would need a machete to get any further.

We continued on our way after we could not find a pre-carved path to the waterfalls. We would have to leave that for another day and further research. We continued on our trek home. As we were driving out of the corner of my good eye on Jer's side (my good eye) I saw a bald eagle standing on the side of the road. At first we buzzed by and all I could say was... "what a good carving of a bald eagle!" as I said those words to Jer he looked back and saw a very real eagle hop into the brush. We u-turned and made our way back to the spot we had seen him. We could see him perched in the trees just out of reach, we waited patiently and finally he hopped down and waddled walking through the long grass to the side of the road. He was eating a dead beaver! We watched him for a long time. We watched his reaction to the continual cars buzzing by and watched as more eagles, crows and ravens showed up. At some point I realized that we could probably sit there all day watching this and that we would have many more opportunities for wildlife sightings in the future so we moved on. But man was he cool.

Our bald eagle friend eating happily.

And that's it! Best Day Ever!

We hope everyone had a kick ass Canada Day and are proud to be Canadian. I have had the opportunity to visit 5 of our provinces and hope to travel to the rest one day. I love this country and am so glad that I have gotten to experience so much of its beauty, people, wildlife and quirks.

Wish us luck in our future Adventures!

Love always from the West Coast,

Our Adventure

Ferry Island, Terrace, British Columbia
Officially Checked Off My Bucket List

I have been to Terrace many times in my life, I have experienced a lot of neat and exciting things here, but I had never been to Ferry Island. I have driven over the bridge and passed the entrance to Ferry Island on our way into town more times than I can count. I have even walked across the bridge passing the sign but I have never officially turned in and stopped to smell the cottonwood. I finally got to go today, and it makes me feel like dreams really do come true. Veronica acted as our tour guide making sure we were safe and didn't get lost. Jeremy was the animal spotter with his keen sense for cute creatures. That left me as the photographer and documenter of the journey. We saw a lot, walked a lot and laughed a lot so I will try and summarize the highlights of our afternoon adventure.

It ended up being an easy walk on a beautiful day, no hills to climb, and neatly carved paths that were well worn. It is surrounded by the mighty Skeena River and we have seen many people standing on the pebble rock beach fishing and having bon fires. Its a fast flowing river that is not suitable for swimming or even kayaking but it sure is beautiful to look at. As we walked along the paths on the island we were able to peak out at the river in a few spots, of course also basking in the view of the mountains all around us. It is unbelievably breathtakingly beautiful around here. I still find myself constantly looking around in disbelief that I'm actually here.

We came across a swamp in the middle of the island and analyzed the creatures around the shallow edges. There were tad poles, dragon flies, water bugs and beetles, weird bugs that looked like indoor centipedes and of course little fish. We were startled to see a beaver who had set up shop in the middle of the small pond. We ended up watching him for about half an hour. He was adorable, using his little hands to eat and grab stuff. He drifted contently around. Even as a dog approached he confidently glided to the centre of the water, not bothered at all by the splashing pup. I wasn't able to get the best picture of him but just know we were close enough to see his little individual fingers.

The big attraction for Ferry Island is camping but there are also famous carvings in the big old cotton wood trees. A local artist/possibly multiple artists have carved a ton faces and animals into the bark of the trees. Its like a treasure hunt walking through the trails and spotting all of these strange carvings. Its one of the coolest places I think I have ever been. We came across a few locals that do the walk a lot who said there must be over 50 of them. Face's of all different emotions and expressions, we ended up seeing 18 faces, 3 owls and a dragon. I took a picture of all the ones we came across but we after 2 hours of exploring we still have a lot to uncover. The island is literally a 5 minute drive or 15 minute bike ride from where we are living so we will have many more opportunities to visit. I plan on making it a regular on our list of local spots.

Enjoy.

Wish us luck on our next adventure.

Our Adventure - The Grand Finale!

Our Adventure - Day 6

🌟The Grand Finale🌟

When we woke for the final day of our journey it felt like the beginning of a new chapter for us. We woke early tired and a bit groggy but renewed and ready. It was going to be a long day of driving to Terrace, an estimated 12 hours of driving plus of course stops. The hotel we stayed at had a breakfast special, we broke our fast there around 7 am. Since it was attached to the hotel we left our stuff in the room for when we were done our meal. Jasper was a surprisingly small town and the hotel fit that same description. It was a beautiful, cozy, homey place. We packed the cars once again with our overnight bags and got ready for the final leg of our tour across Canada.

❤️View of hotel and one packed car❤️

❤️Drive through Jasper❤️

I was talking to Nana as we exited Jasper park, I froze as I looked at my wrist, I forgot my watch in the bathroom at the hotel! Our walkie talkies were acting up so I wasn't able to get through to Jeremy and to top it all off I lost reception! I flashed my lights, honked my horn and finally decided to just pull over and hope he would notice! It finally worked. I did a look through the car but I knew, just knew that I had left it at the hotel. So back we went. We lost about and hour and a half because of this little detour but it was the only real delay in the trip. And because Of the detour I found my watch!!! The front staff guy saw me rush in and as soon as he looked at me he said "forgot something?" And held up my watch. I was pumped! Back in the car and off again!

❤️Our official entry❤️

❤️Another provincial park❤️

❤️Nature poking through❤️

As we drove through the Rockies I finished my audio book! I couldn't believe that I made it through and enjoyed it! It was essentially a british man reading the book aloud, doing dramatic voices and different accents but it was entertaining!

Not far after entering BC we saw our first bear. We believed it was a grizzley and therefore stayed in our cars but I was able to snap a pic!

❤️bear❤️

We were making good time all things considered, although another time zone change did help. We made it to Prince George around noon. It was a very hilly but there was not a mountain as far a you could see. It felt industrial. It was not necessarily the prettiest town. We ate quickly at a&w which was very needed to keep up our strength.

❤️yum❤️

❤️Happy to be back on the road❤️

And as we continued on our journey the mountains came back, bigger and more beautiful than ever!

❤️mountains❤️

❤️Mountains❤️

Along the way we saw another 5 black bears. They were unbelievably cute and if we didn't know they were so dangerous I'm sure we would have tried to catch one. But we do know how dangerous there are and therefore kept back and actually just did the slow drive by.

❤️driving by a big train❤️

We finally came across the highway of tears sign which jer did not think existed.  It's awful to see but clearly needed as there really is a killer on the loose nabbing hitch hiking girls.

❤️don't hitch hike in northern bc❤️

We buzzed through the last two hours of our trip. The roads were windy and beautiful but time consuming. It felt like forever. I kept getting chocked up thinking about seeing the family. There was a planned welcoming committee of my mom, her husband Anthony, my sister Linnea and her boyfriend Taylor, my little sister Veronica and my niece Jade.

❤️ready to see everyone❤️

We saw the famous seven sisters peaks as we passed the final half hour of our trip.

❤️7❤️

After 5 nights and 6 days, 5000 miles in two cars we finally arrived. It was such a strange mix of emotions. Happy to be there but exhausted from the miles. Surprised to see how beautiful the town was but shocked at how rural everything was! It was instant culture shock to realize that this would be our home for the next year but the sight of our family was so increadably exciting it gave me butterflies.

❤️home❤️

I will attempt to blog every now and then! Probably once our twice a week!

❤️wish us luck❤️
